Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
