Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
